“Vampire Diaries” season finales have never disappointed us, but this year’s season-ender is arguably the most ambitious episode the series has ever done — and not just because it includes a harrowing (and expensive) underwater sequence.

The gang is dealing with the most troublesome kind of villain: the kind who used to be a hero. Evil Alaric knows all of our protagonists very well, which gives him an advantage that previous baddies didn’t have. We’re not entirely sure what he’s doing in the storage facility, but judging by the look on his evil, evil face, he’s not too happy to be there.

Of course, we’re particularly excited for the return of Sara Canning as Aunt Jenna. In flashback scenes, we’ll have the opportunity to see what Jenna was like before she had to take on the responsibility of her sister’s two teenage kids. Those flashback scenes also remind us that Elena wasn’t always the broody angst-fest that she is now — she once had a whole lot more pep in her step.

HitFix: When you think back on characters from the show’s past, how many would you describe as “Totally off-limits, off-the-table, never-coming-back, definitely really dead”?

Julie Plec: That’s a good question. I think that any human who’s ever died, we won’t see again. Our rules of the other side are strictly about supernatural beings. Who else? Well, we’ll get a little clue into Aunt Jenna’s whereabouts in the next couple episodes and then, of course, we’ll see Sara Canning in the finale, just in a nice little flashback, back when everybody was normal and human. So… Yeah.

Aunt Jenna will celebrate her one-year deathiversary with a surprise return to The Vampire Diaries, when, in the Season 3 finale (airing May 10), Sara Canning reprises the fan fave role.
But how will they bring Mystic Falls’ dearly departed denizen back to life?

As first reported by our friends at Zap2it, Jenna won’t be revived via the CW saga’s signature witchery or otherworldly means, but rather through a series of flashbacks that examine Elena’s life before her parents’ untimely death.

Since her Vampire Diaries departure last year, Canning has enjoyed a sexy turn on Supernatural and starred in the Lifetime original movie The Hunt for the I-5 Killer.

“The Vampire Diaries” star plays a predator attack expert in the spin-off of ITV’s “Primeval” series from Brit producer Impossible Pictures.

TORONTO – The Vampire Diaries actress Sara Canning and Niall Matter have been tapped to star in Primeval: New World, a Canadian spin-off of the Primeval sci-fi series from Brit producer Impossible Pictures.

Miranda Frigon, Geoff Gustafson and Danny Rahim co-star in the Canadian sci-fi series, while Andrew-Lee Potts of the original Primeval series on ITV will guest star.
Canning will play a predator attack expert, while Matter is an inventor and visionary hero in the drama from Impossible Pictures and local producer Omni Film Productions.
Sanctuary actress Amanda Tapping will join Andy Mikita, Martin Wood and Mike Rohl in directing episodes of Primeval: New World.

The new Canadian drama, structured as a Canada-UK co-production, uses characters and story-lines from the British Primeval series, while inserting new Canadian characters and story-lines into the local version.
Production on 13 episodes for Canada’s Space cable channel has started in Vancouver.
Martin Wood and Gillian Horvath are executive producing.
The spin-off series was created by Judith Reeves-Stevens and Garfield Reeves-Stevens, with scripts written by Horvath, Peter Hume, Jon Cooksey, Sarah Dodd, Katherine Collins and Judith Reeve-Stevens and Garfield Reeve-Stevens.

Entertainment One is handling the international distribution rights.
